Let there be light(s)

These two pictures of the models Saskia de Brauw and Andrej Pejic would be considered low key or "Rembrandt" lighting. Characteristics of low key lighting include dark shadows, uneven lighting, and, on frontal shots, a triangle of light on the darker side of the face. This style of lighting is typically more dramatic, with exaggerated shadow and selective illumination of the subject.

Using the same two models, these photos employ high key, or "Butterfly," lighting. This style of lighting gives a more even light coverage, lightening shadows and reducing contrast. Can be less moody that low key lighting, because nothing is hidden or highlighted-everything is lit the same.
